Claude Opus 5 Released

Claude Opus 5 is a new AI model that approaches frontier intelligence at half the price of Fable 5. It excels in software engineering tasks and is the new default model on Claude Max. However, it remains behind Mythos 5 in cybersecurity tasks and biology research.

Claude Opus 5 is a new AI model released by Anthropic, approaching frontier intelligence at half the price of Fable 5 [1]. It excels in software engineering tasks, such as coding and knowledge work evaluations like Frontier-Bench and GDPval-AA [2]. On these evaluations, Opus 5 surpasses all other models, more than doubling Opus 4.8's performance at a lower cost per task [3]. However, it remains behind Mythos 5 in cybersecurity tasks and biology research.

Opus 5 is designed to be used every day, working more efficiently than other models, and is the new default model on Claude Max [4]. It's also the strongest model on Claude Pro. The model provides greatly improved performance for the same cost as its predecessor, Opus 4.8 [5]. For example, on Frontier-Bench v0.1, Opus 5 surpasses all other models, and more than doubles Opus 4.8's performance at a lower cost per task [6].

On CursorBench 3.2, at max effort, the model performs within 0.5% of Fable 5's peak score, but at half the cost per task [7]. Opus 5 is capable of producing much stronger visual outputs and is the best and most cost-efficient model on several related evaluations [8]. However, it has limitations in cybersecurity tasks and biology research. In rigorous evaluations conducted alongside private-sector and government partners, Opus 5 remains behind Mythos 5 in both biology research and offensive cybersecurity [9].

The model's cyber classifiers are proportionally less restrictive than those on Fable 5, allowing Opus 5 to find vulnerabilities in source code, but blocking binary-based vulnerability scanning, penetration testing, and exploit generation [10]. Claude Opus 5 is available today on all platforms, priced at $5 per million input tokens and $25 per million output tokens [11].
